Getting AroundTaxis Taxis are the form of transport most commonly used by tourists to get around while vacationing in the island. Taxis are fairly easy to find both in the capital, Bridgetown, as well as from the airport and other major shopping areas. There is a government monitored flat rate system, but make sure that you settle on a price and currency before getting in the cab. A list is available from the tourist office.
Car Rentals Travelers who don't mind paying more for the convenience of their own rental car will find plenty of local agencies. Visitors will be pleased to note that gas stations and parking are a bit easier to locate on Barbados than on some of the more crowded Caribbean islands. Drivers should obtain a local Driver's Permit which can be obtained from most car rental agencies or from any Police station for $10 BDS. they are valid for one year from date of issue. In barbados we drive on the left hand side of the road and it is the law to drive with a seat belt. A hefy fine will be incurred if you or your passengers are caught without it.
The "H" license plates indicate a hired vehicle and locals tend to be accomodating to any problems which you may have. Don't pay anyone to "guard" your car unless they are in uniform. please make sure to lock all vehicles and take the same precautions you would in your own country in terms of taking ALL valuables with you.
The speed limit is generally 60 kph on minor roads and 80 kph on the highways, however in ceratin areas the speed limit may be lower so just watch for those signs.
Transport Board Buses Transport Board Buses (large blue & yellow buses) are a good transportation choice for visitors on a budget and those eager to experience the customs and hospitality of the local people. At a flat rate of approx BDS. $1.50 for all journeys, this is the way to go. Although cheap buses can be crowded during rush hour and all buses terminate in Speightstown.
Bus stops are usually marked In to City or Out of City (meaning Bridgetown). In Bridgetown the main transport board terminals are on Fairchild Street or Lower Green and Princess Alice Highway for Coastal routes. For additional information please feel free to contact the Barbados Transport Board at (246) 436-6820.
Minibuses and ZRs Competing bus lines keep fares low and routes well serviced. Plenty of stops ensure that riders are always able to disembark near their destination. The Minibuses & ZRS are not on a schedule as are the transport buses so sometimes you may have a wait for them. The culture on the minibuses and ZRS can tend to be more laid back and you will frequently hear reggae music coming from them. The Minibuses and ZRS are commonly known by locals to be often seen travelling in excess of the speed limit so this is not recommended for passengers who prefer a slower ride.
Yachts and Catamarans There are plenty of yachts and catamarans available for charter. Skilled crews and native guides make tours enjoyable, as does the ability to customize a trip to suit any type of vacation.
Bikes and Mopeds Bikes and mopeds are also widely available and are a perfect option for a day trip through the scenic countryside. Rates can be quoted either daily or weekly, making this an affordable transportation option for seeing Barbados. In-town bicycles and scooters are a pleasant way to get back and forth to the beach, but are not practical as your primary source of transportation around the whole island.
